Ice begins to melt as temperatures climb above freezing across region

WELCH —  The sleet and ice that made for difficult walking and driving conditions across the region this morning is beginning to melt.

A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., expired at 10 a.m. this morning today. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 40s this afternoon, and should remain above freezing tonight when additional rain is expected.

Wind gusts late Thursday night knocked down a large tree on Toledo Street in Bluefield and city firefighters responded to a tree fire early Friday morning.

“Our crew responded to a report of the tree fire on Pearl Street and were on the scene at 5:53 a.m.,” Bluefield Fire Chief Jeff Warden said. “They cleared at 6:05 a.m., so they must have been able to extinguish it quickly.”

The incident report was not immediately available Friday morning.
