Bluestone Industrial Park: New dental school is first tenant

TAZEWELL, Va. — A dental school will be the first tenant of a new industrial park located along U.S. Route 460 in Tazewell County, a county consultant announced Wednesday.

Frank Kilgore, a consultant hired by Tazewell County, released a statement  announcing that central Appalachia’s only dental school will be established at the Bluestone Regional Business and Industrial Park in Tazewell County, Va.

“Dental school advocates in Southwest Virginia have been studying the need for and the feasibility of a dental school for years,” Kilgore said in his statement.

Work on the business and technology park got underway in October 2010 after a groundbreaking ceremony. The park is designed for high-tech business, residential space, walking trails, a workforce-training center, lodging and daycare, retail stores, a golf course and more.

The 680-acre park is located along the U.S. Route 19-460 corridor between Bluefield, Va. and Tazewell, Va.

Tazewell County Administrator Jim Spencer issued a statement after the Tazewell County Industrial Authority met Wednesday.

“The Tazewell County IDA had a meeting this afternoon at which time they approved entering into a memorandum of understanding with the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors and Bluefield College for a new academic program which will be unveiled Friday at 10 a.m. at the Bluestone. At which time there will be a press conference and the M.O.U. will be signed at that time,” Spencer said.

“An outside consultant for the IDA released notice of this event and that was an unauthorized release because all the parties involved wanted to wait until Friday to announce this project.  The construction on the Bluestone is still ongoing; therefore access to the event will be somewhat limited as to where the attendees to the event will be allowed to go. This is to protect the safety of the attendees and the contractor,” Spencer said.

“It is our goal to host an open house at the Bluestone for the general public once the contractor is finished and has demobilized from the site,” Spencer said.

Officials with Bluefield College could not be reached for comment late Wednesday evening.
