Bluefield College music professor Dr. Barbara Hudson, a virtuoso coloratura voice with extensive performing experience, will present a solo faculty recital, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel. Hudson, a light lyric-coloratura soprano, will offer a program of art songs, spirituals and opera arias by composers like J.S. Bach, Debussy, Gounod, Faure, Verdi, Bellini and Cimara. Her music will cover vocal literature from several major historical periods of song, including baroque, romantic, and 20th century, as well as works from living composers and arrangers.
“This program represents some very popular lyric-coloratura soprano selections,” said Hudson about her recital agenda, “as well as some rarely-heard arrangements of spirituals.” Hudson, who teaches voice, music history and literature at Bluefield College, has performing experience in opera and music theatre, traditional and contemporary sacred music, music of living composers and community choral and oratorio venues.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education in choral music from James Madison University, a master’s degree in music with a concentration in church music and vocal pedagogy from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in music with a concentration in vocal pedagogy from the University of Mississippi. She also is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and directs the BC’s Masterworks Chorale.
Accompanying Hudson on piano will be Lisa Moxley, an instructor of music who teaches piano and directs BC’s student voice ensemble, Bluefield Singers. She holds 23 years of experience in private piano instruction and has accompanied the Virginia Baptist Women’s Chorale and served as an instructor and accompanist for various musical camps and workshops across the state. She is also co-minister of music at First Baptist Church in Bluefield.
Hudson’s faculty recital is open and free to the public. For more information regarding this or other events on the BC Fine Arts Series, contact the Office of Public Relations by phone at (276)326-4212, or by e-mail bcnews@bluefield.edu.
