High gasoline prices are putting a crimp in many vacation budgets. But there is an inexpensive alternative: recreation at home.
Gov. Joe Manchin is asking residents of the Mountain State to “celebrate West Virginia” by taking advantage of local recreational and entertainment opportunities.
The governor will be appearing in television commercials the first week of June touting West Virginia’s tourist attractions. Manchin has visited numerous attractions across the state, and the tag line with each ad will ask, “Where in the state is Gov. Joe Manchin?”
This increased promotion of Mountain State tourist attractions is timely — and could certainly benefit the many local communities that boast fairs, festivals and other recreational activities.
We in southern West Virginia have an added bonus when traveling close to home — our next-door neighbor in Virginia.
Southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia benefit from a number of attractions, including Pipestem State Park, Pinnacle Rock, Panther State Park, the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine, the Historic Crab Orchard Museum, Glenwood Park, Camp Creek State Park, Lake Witten in Tazewell, Va., the New River in Giles County and the Coal Miner’s Memorial in Richlands, Va.
This weekend’s Mountain Festival in Bluefield offers a wide variety of events and entertainment designed to please children, teens and adults. And, it’s only the first of many events planned throughout the region in coming months.
The “Celebrate Princeton” Street Fair is scheduled June 9 and 10, followed by the Let Freedom Ride Motorcycle event June 15-17. Throughout the summer and fall, fairs and festivals will also be held in Bluefield, Va., Richlands, Tazewell County, McDowell County, Spanishburg and many other communities.
We echo Gov. Manchin’s suggestion to enjoy a weekend getaway by taking advantage of “a great, inexpensive retreat close to home.”
