Water quality tops in Bluefield, Va.

The town of Bluefield, Va. has garnered a unique honor that is worthy of celebrating. During a meeting earlier this week of the Virginia Rural Water Conference, the town was recognized as having the “Best Water Plant of the Year” in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

According to Bluefield, Va. Town Manager Todd Day, the water plant of the year award is presented to a municipal system that excels in water plant maintenance and water plant upkeep, as well as in areas of growth and expansion. The award is presented to only one water plant in the Commonwealth each year.

This is the second time in the last 10 years that Virginia’s Tallest Town has garnered the unique honor. Day attributes the success of the municipal water system to town employees, and those who operate the water plant.

The town just completed a multi-million dollar capital improvement project about a year and-a-half ago. The upgrades included a new water plant, a new distribution system and the replacement of aging water lines across the town.

Day said the capital improvement project will help to ensure continued growth in Bluefield, Va. According to Day, the new water system has an 80 percent accountability rate, and at times that accountability level exceeds 90 percent. The accountability rate is a measure of water that can be accounted for in a water system.

“I think it’s a pretty outstanding accomplishment in today’s economic times to be able to say the water plant and the employees over there have strived for excellence,” Day said Thursday. “There is no question that the consumers who consume water from the Bluefield, Va., water plant can rest assured that they are getting the best quality water that the water plant can produce.”

We join Day in commending the town employees responsible for this prestigious honor. It’s good to know that the residents of Bluefield, Va., are drinking among the best water in the state that is produced from the best water plant in the Commonwealth.

That’s a winning combination for Virginia’s Tallest Town.
