Mercer County Prosecutor Timm Boggess said he will soon make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Ninth Judicial Circuit bench. Rumors have been floating around since last February that he might consider running for the bench. He will be facing Judge Omar Aboulhosn who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Joe Manchin in 2008. Manchin also considered Boggess for the judgeship.

David Cox of Mullens has recently been appointed as the McDowell County supervisor for the West Virginia Division of Highways. His appointment will become effective Dec. 2.
Cox replaces Earl Crigger who retired. Rick White, an area administrator with the District 10 Office in Princeton (Gardner) has been acting as the interim supervisor.
Cox, a Mullens native, began his 30-year career with the DOH’s District 10 Construction on Division working under Frank Marcinko in the resurfacing section. A few years later, he was appointed the Wyoming County Assistant Supervisor working under the direction of County Supervisor Bill Wilcox. Cox held that position for 26 years. Cox also served as the acting Wyoming County Supervisor for nearly a year while Mr. Wilcox recovered from severe injuries he received as a passenger in an automobile accident.
Cox makes his home in Mullens with his wife Beverly. They have a son Ryan and a grandson Bryson. Cox is active in community and civic affairs in Mullens. He is also a member of the Mullens Masonic Lodge, active in the Wyoming County children’s Christmas toy drive, and is an avid booster for Wyoming East High School. Cox was appointed to the job after being selected through a competitive bidding process, which considered his experience, credentials, and other qualifications for the position.
The W.Va. DOH McDowell County Headquarters is located in Havaco and occupies a new facility that was recently erected.

The Summit Players are preparing to give another performance of “A Tuna Christmas.” The stage production was first presented on the Bluefield stage 12 years ago. James Dyer and Skip Crane have teamed up to play 11 different characters and make nearly 50 costume changes. The show is “part two” of “Greater Tuna” that was performed two years ago.
The show is expected to be a sellout. Show times are December 4, 5, 11 and 12 with dinner at the Friday and Saturday evening shows. The play is set in “Tuna, Texas” home of the tuna cactus. The show will be a hoot. Call (304) 325-8000 for reservations.

The West Virginia Division of Highways has re-paved a portion of West Virginia Route 103 between Pageton and the Gary Country Club near Thorpe. The project also included paving a portion of the shoulder area effectively widening the usable portion of the roadway.
The additional paved area is a safety improvement promoted by Gov. Joe Manchin. A few years ago at a seminar for DOH engineers, administrators, and technicians in Morgantown, Manchin stated that if he caught any state DOH organization re-paving a roadway without including the safety widening, he would shut the project down immediately.

While we are on the subject of the W.Va. DOH, the intersection of U.S. 19 and U.S. 52 near Hardees in Bluefield is wash boarded and extremely rough. Something needs to be dome to eliminate the rough pavement.

Talk about inflation. I saw a sign the other day “Penny Candy — $1.89” I remember looking into the candy case in Tom O’Neal’s store at Coopers at the boxes behind the counter at Harris Grocery in Shinbrier when Mary Jane’s, Kits, and bubble gum actually cost a penny. For a quarter you could have a RC, Moonpie, and a bag of Gordon’s potato chips. A pencil cost a nickel.

There you have it, a few comments on items of interest to the area. I hope that the skies above are blue today.
Wilson Butt, a resident of Bluefield, is a retired Department of Highways official.
