On a story about our latest planetary close call, and the question, “What’s with all of the asteroids and comets suddenly getting so close to our planet?”:
• It is not a sudden occurrence by any means. Our methods of detection have improved. The frequency of the phenomenon has not changed — Mark D.
• It’s the universe telling the planet that cutting science and space funding is not a good idea — Joe H.
On whether passengers should be allowed to carry small knives on passenger flights, and if airline security measures are too strict:
• Wait, we can’t take our guns on airplanes? It’s our Second Amendment right. When the founding fathers drafted the Constitution I’m sure they intended for us to be able to take guns on planes in case we had to defend ourselves against terrorists — Jamie L.
• If we ease up, they will take another plane. I know it’s a hassle to go through what we have to since 9/11. But the enemy came and we have to stay prepared to find him this time and not let another 9/11 happen — Shirley M.

• [In] Monroe County in Peterstown there is a bridge that is nothing but potholes. You have to crawl across it and it still causes damage to your vehicle but they just keep throwing gravel on it. I feel they have no intentions of fixing it — Miranda R.

• Mercer County needs to give up that spring break for snow days! It’s not that far from summer break! I’d much rather have my child at home on a bad snowy day then have a spring break! — Mae E.

On a poll question asking if you agree with a proposed ordinance in Bluefield that seeks to ban pit bulls from the city limits:
• No! — Wayne J.
• No. Pit bulls have a stigma attached to them that is not deserved. Any breed of dog will be mean if treated poorly and with cruelty — Michael W.
• No! I think they should ban the owners who mistreat the dogs or train them to be vicious! It is not the dog’s fault, it is absolutely the owners! — Beverly R.

• The reason I say yes is [because] people walk them around without a muzzle and that’s a law in the city. And I have raised a pit bull. And it was a good dog until about 1 year old, and it tried to bite my 3-year-old in the face. If it would have locked on it would have killed him. Before that day the dog had played with my kids every day. Then it snapped! ... They are not a pet — Cy G
• Ridiculous! Like most things, people believe what they see and hear on TV — paranoia! And just like government — they can’t take care of current problems, so they make up new ones. A dog is just like a gun, it’s who controls it that can make it dangerous. My son-in-law had three pit bulls around my grand kids and I was never fearful that they might attack them in any way — Dale D.
• I am a pit bull owner and no! I think the owners need to be held responsible for being irresponsible, as a pet only acts how it is taught! — Mandy B.
• It’s a fact that pits are very aggressive dogs. It doesn’t matter how they are raised. They have a tendency to turn on their owners and are very dangerous to other dogs and children. However, banning them isn’t going to solve the problem. They need to be kept fenced and on a very strong leash. If someone wants to have one that’s their choice but they should be responsible for the consequences — Angela C.
• No, it’s not the pit it’s the owner of the pit. Start charging the owner and remove the pit from that environment — April S.
