Concord sweeps Pioneers

ATHENS — The Concord Lady Lions basketball team took down the top women’s basketball team in the West Virginia Conference, Glenville State College, for the second time this season with a hard-fought 79-66 win in the Carter Center on Monday night.

Concord (17-6, 14-5 WVIAC) never trailed in the second half, but had its hands full keeping the Pioneers (16-6, 14-4) and their offensive “System” at bay.

As in their previous win over Glenville State in November, Concord got production from the post. Senior Jolysa Brown led all scorers with 24 points, along with 14 rebounds, six assists and a block. Teammate Andrea Bertrand tossed in 18 points with eight boards.

The Lady Lions, who led 34-31 at halftime, went 17 for 22 at the foul line while Glenville State was 19 for 25. The home squad shot 42.4 percent from the floor in the game and allowed the Pioneers 38.6 percent shooting from the field.

Glenville State’s Tenisha Wilson had 21 points and Mishae Miles, the conference player of the week, had 13 rebounds but only four points. The Pioneers committed five turnovers to Concord’s six.



Men’s game: Concord 79, Glenville State 65

The Mountain Lions completed the sweep in the second game of the night, making 52.54 percent of its field-goal tries.

Romel Kemp kept up his strong play with 22 points and five rebounds for Concord (13-10, 10-9 WVIAC), which won its third straight game for new coach Kent McBride.

Javaughn Acree-Manuel had 19 points, five steals and four assists for CU, and Burnell Granderson added 12 points. Concord led 39-26 at the half.

Jamel Morris scored 26 points and Nate Cash had 10 rebounds for Glenville State (6-16, 5-13), which shot only 33 percent from the field but 19 for 20 from the foul line.
