HUNTINGTON —
Marshall’s basketball season ended Tuesday night when the Ohio Bobcats rallied for a 65-64 win in a first-round game of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Marshall’s Cam Henderson Center.
The second half included 13 lead changes. Damier Pitts gave the Thundering Herd its final lead on a jumper with 2:44 remaining, but Ohio’s D.J. Cooper scored the final basket with 90 seconds left. Marshall then went 0-for-5 from the floor.
“Ohio made a couple more plays than us,” said Marshall first-year coach Tom Herrion.
Ohio (19-15) never led in the first half and was down 36-33 at halftime, following a controversial call to end the first half. Marshall (22-12) had the ball with 2 seconds left, and DeAndre Kane knocked down a three, but it was ruled that the half had ended.
“I am not real good at this one. It is the realization that the season is over. There is not a whole lot left to do,” Herrion said. “Our fans were phenomenal. I applaud them greatly. ... Tonight was a great indicator of how passionate a fan base we have.”
In his final game for the Herd, Tirrell Baines led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. He finishes his career with 1,238 points. Nigel Spikes put up a career-high 19 rebounds along with six points and a pair of blocks.
DeVaughn Washington led Ohio with 16 points.
Marshall finishes its season with its first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 1987 and 1988.
