Marshall women surge past Southern

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Limiting Southern to just 10 points in the final 17 minutes of play, Marshall defeated the Jaguars 57-47 on Sunday in the final game of the A&M Classic.

Veronica Ruiz hit two three-pointers and led the Herd (3-2) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Orlandria Williams scored all her points from the free throw line on a 7-for-8 day, and was later named to the All-Classic team.

Adrian Sanders led Southern (0-5) in nine stat categories, including total points (13), rebounds (7), assists (4) and steals (3). She was 5 for 21 in field-goal attempts.

Southern played well early in each half, then trailed off. The Jaguars got out to a 12-6 lead but at halftime the advantage was 26-24. Marshall’s Suporia Dickens scored all 10 of her points in the first half, to go with six rebounds and three assists in the game.

The Jaguars scored the first 11 points of the second half, but the Herd countered with a 14-6 run and took the lead, 41-39, on a Shay Weaver three with 6:47 left.

Using a stonewall defense and a Ruiz three-pointer to top off a 22-2 run, the Herd pushed the lead to 46-39 with just under six minutes left the game.

Southern took only three foul shots and made them all. Marshall had 16 turnovers but won the rebounding battle, 39 to 31.
