BLUEFIELD, Va. —
The Bluefield College Lady Rams got their season off to a resounding start on Friday evening by dispatching Virginia Intermont 82-59 on the opening evening of the annual Wendy’s Classic at the Dome gymnasium.
The home squad hit 45 percent of its field-goal tries while limiting the Cobras to 30 percent in the first half and 39 percent after that. At the break, the Lady Rams led 42-26.
The scoring gap increased to 29 points near the midpoint of the second half, when Bluefield’s Asia Watson sank a basket for a 59-30 lead.
Teqa McNeal led all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Rams on 9-for-16 shooting from the floor. She made three of BC’s eight three-point goals. Teammate Ashley White had 17 points and a game-high six assists. Janee Simmons pulled down seven rebounds for Bluefield.
The leading scorer for the Cobras was Rainey Story, who hit 7 of 10 field-goal tries and wound up with 21 points. Alexis Hite had eight of VI’s 43 rebounds.
Virginia Intermont is a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference, which Bluefield College left last summer to join the Mid-South Conference.
The Wendy’s Classic continues today at 6 p.m. with Bluefield College taking on Allen College from Columbia, S.C. The final game will be at 2 p.m. Sunday with Allen playing Virginia Intermont.
