Concord golfers first, BSC third after day one

WVIAC Central Regional off to chilly start

DAVIS — The Concord Mountain Lions men’s golf team shot out to a six-stroke lead with a 274 on the first day of the WVIAC Central Regional on Monday at Canaan Valley Golf Course near Davis.

Bluefield State is in third place with a 292, which coach Terry Brown said was a record low for the school. The Big Blues won the conference crown last year.

The competition in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle is scheduled to conclude today. The four low scores from each institution counted as the team score.

Brown said the conditions were “cold, windy for the most part, very playable but unseasonably low, temperature-wise.” The wind subsided by afternoon, he said.

Nick Dent, the conference player of the week on Sept. 12, led the Bluefield State golfers with a round of 70, par for the course. Chandler Beavers was at 73, freshman J.J. McPherson was at 74 and Jeff McGraw had a 75.

Concord’s individual scores were not available late Monday night.

Brown said, “Nick has been one of the top players, if not the top player in the conference and the region, all year. In his senior year he’s played very well and picked it up for us.”

Brown added, “I thought Chandler Beavers played very well. Tyler Browning, Jeff McGraw and J.J. McPherson, I thought, played well. They picked it up, our 4 and 5, played very well.”

In order to get to the top spot today, Brown said, “I think our 3 and 4 guy is going to have to come in a couple over par or par. If everything holds true with Dent and with Beavers, and they step it up a couple of strokes, we can win this tournament.”
