BSC launches cross country season at Virginia Tech

Concord women 7th, men 8th

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The women’s cross country team from Concord came in seventh and the men earned an eighth-place finish at the Virginia Tech Invitational, while Bluefield State women and men were both ninth Friday afternoon.

Bluefield State newcomer Leandra Childs, a graduate of Bluefield High School, and Concord’s Chelsea Callaway finished the 6k run less than a second apart to take 42nd and 43rd place, respectively, leading their teams.

The Mountain Lions were guided by Robby Peters’ fourth-place effort in the 8k race, finishing in 25:11.51. Sterling Snyder was 49th in a time of 26:44.97 for CU.

The Big Blues, opening their season, were paced by Alieu Dem and Kharles Mwalo, who finished just three seconds apart in the race.

The majority of the runners came from the NCAA Division I level. The Florida State women ran away with the team trophy after capturing the first seven spots. In the men’s race, Florida State’s Zak Seddon was first at 25:08.53 and the Seminoles won as a team.

The Bluefield State men and women will race in the Roanoke (Va.) Invitational on Saturday. Concord will be in action the same day at the University of Charleston Invitational.
