Carnett to compete for national title

BLUEFIELD — Concord University’s Shawnee Carnett will race for a national title in the 800-meter run this evening after winning one of three preliminary races on Friday with a time of 2:10.92 at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. She bided her time in the middle of the six-woman field for much of the race before exploding to the front of the pack in the final lap to secure the victory and automatically advance to the finals. Carnett, a former outdoor 800-meter national championship, will look to win her second NCAA title in the championship race at 6 p.m. EST today.
