Concord, Bluefield College fall on the road

CARY, N.C. — Tyler Horan hit a bases-loaded triple to help Virginia Tech defeat Tennessee 7-3 on Sunday on the final day of the Irish Baseball Classic at the USA Complex.

The Hokies are 11-2 for the second straight season and are ranked No. 25 by Baseball America, their first top-25 ranking since 2010.

After the Volunteers closed to within 4-3, the Hokies’ Alex Perez drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and Sean Keselica drove in the final two runs with a single.

Devin Burke (3-0) picked up the win for the Hokies, after throwing 5 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, three runs, two earned, and struck out three.

Jake Joyce came on for the save, and Virginia Tech took its seventh win in nine days.

Shippensburg 11, Concord 7

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Joey Miller’s fourth home run of the year gave Concord a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the Raiders used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good and finished off a three-game sweep of the Mountain Lions (5-8) on a cold day in Pennsylvania.

The Mountain Lions’ Bret Blevins drove in two runs with a seventh-inning single to cap a four-run outburst that cut into Shippensburg’s 10-3 lead. Blevins also stole a base.

For the Raiders (7-1), Pat Kregeloh batted 3 for 4 and hit a solo home run for the game’s final score.

Concord managed one hit in the last two innings.

Tyler Zimm (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Concord’s third relief pitcher of the day, Chris Baker, struck out five and scattered six hits over the final four innings.

Concord begins WVIAC play on Saturday at noon with a doubleheader against Seton Hill at Anderson Field.

Bluefield drops two

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Bluefield College Rams had 2-0 leads in both of Sunday’s games at Shawnee State University, but the Bears completed a three-game sweep, taking 5-3 and 8-5 wins.

Bluefield (7-10) got stellar no-hit pitching for the first five innings of game two from Zac Russell-Myers, who retired the first 16 Shawnee State batters he faced. But after Shawnee State got two singles, Calvin Sluberski hit a triple to tie the game 2-2.

Russell-Myers was 4 for 6 at bat in the first game.

The Bears’ Jordan Williams appeared in both games as a relief pitcher, allowing no runs and six hits in six innings.

Shawnee State (11-8) won its fourth and fifth games in a row.
