A band of Battlers from Alderson-Broaddus College invaded Ned Shott Gymnasium, Wednesday night and left town with a pair of wins over the teams from Bluefield State College.
The AB women came from behind to claim a 57-51 win over the Lady Blues, while in the nightcap Alderson-Broaddus ran past the Big Blues 98-69.
The Lady Blues dominated the first 20 minutes of play rolling out to a 14-2 early lead. Charlene Diggs connected from the outside while Shae Mebane snagged rebounds and converted on baskets in the paint.
State took a 30-13 lead into the intermission.
The second half belonged to the visitors from Philippi. AB opened the half on a 14-5 run to pull to within eight points. BSC answered and went back ahead by 14 only to see AB battle back. With six minutes remaining Amanda Peoples drained a trey to give the Lady Battlers their first lead of the game, 46-45 and it was a lead Alderson-Broaddus would hold onto for the victory.
Mebane had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked four shots and had a steal. Diggs finished with 15 points, including three buckets from behind the three point line. Kelli Morgan dished out five assists.
Peoples led AB with 20 points and seven boards. Leah Hurst came off the bench to score 14 and Natalie Smith had six assists.
BSC outrebounded AB 45-39, but the Lady Blues committed 16 turnovers compared to nine by the Lady Battlers.
Bluefield State is now 3-12 in the WVIAC and 4-17 overall. Alderson-Broaddus moved to 4-11 in the conference and 6-13 in all games.
In the men’s game BSC scored the first two points of the contest before AB ran off 12 unanswered and never looked back.
The Battlers carried a 42-24 lead into the half.
AB shot well from the field, converting on 60 percent of its shots in the game, including 47 percent of its three point attempts.
Nate Barnes the Battlers with 23 points.
Chase Morgan led State with a game-high 24 and Vincent Rogers added 11.
Bluefield State fell to 0-15 in league play and 1-18 in all games.
Alderson-Broaddus improved to 12-3 in the conference and 15-4 overall.
