BLUEFIELD, Va. —
It’s been a long time since the Dome Gymnasium on the Bluefield College campus has seen this kind of activity at conference tournament time.
In their last year in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, both the BC basketball teams, the men and the women, have finished third in the league standings, and with that comes the opportunity to host a first-round playoff game on their cozy home court.
The Rams (17-14, 10-6 AAC) tip off tonight at 7 p.m., hosting sixth-place Montreat (12-16, 7-9). Bluefield has won two of their last three games, beating Montreat 96-83 and handling Bryan 80-56 prior to a home-court setback to Virginia Intermont, 92-78, last Wednesday.
Byron Carpenter is the Rams’ leader in scoring and rebounding, with an average of 21.7 points and 8.42 boards per contest. Kearsten Marion has made 79 of 181 three-point attempts for the Rams.
Bluefield’s men are 8-3 on their home court. If the Rams win tonight, they will host a semifinal game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Rams (19-9, 13-5) take on No. 6 Milligan (17-13, 9-9) on Wednesday night at the Dome in another AAC quarterfinal game. With a win, Bluefield would move on to a Friday night semifinal, either in the Dome or at Union College if Union wins on Wednesday.
Bluefield’s women enter their game with a three-game winning streak in which they have averaged more than 75 points per game.
All games in this year’s tourney are being played on the home courts of the higher seeds.
