CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —
The Virginia women’s basketball team dropped its fourth straight game and the Demon Deacons took their first victory in Charlottesville since 1978 on Monday night, as Wake Forest beat the Cavaliers 73-68 in overtime.
In a game with five lead changes and 12 ties through the end of regulation, Virginia’s Jaryn Garner grabbed a rebound off a Wake Forest missed shot with 30 second left in the second half, giving the Cavaliers the final possession in a 60-60 game. Virginia had three shot attempts in the final six seconds, but couldn’t get one to fall, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Virginia trailed 64-60 when a layup from Simone Egwu followed by a three-pointer from the top of the arc from Faith Randolph gave UVa a 65-64 lead with 3:01 left in the extra period.
A three-pointer from Lakevia Boykin with 23 seconds left in the game gave Wake a 71-66 advantage. Sarah Imovbioh made a layup with four seconds left in the game, but Wake hit a pair of free throws to seal it.
Imovbioh had a career night, pulling in a career-high 18 rebounds while also scoring 18 points and grabbing a career-high five steals.
