The Bluefield College softball team split an afternoon doubleheader on Monday at Southern Virginia University, taking game one 10-1 in six innings and dropping the finale, 3-2.
After spotting the Knights a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, Bluefield (3-3) scored twice in the fourth.
Kasey Holcomb led off the inning with a double for the Lady Rams, who lead NAIA Division I in doubles per game with 3.5 per contest. Kourtney McGrady single brought Holcomb home, and Breanne Vencil singled to give Bluefield the 2-1 advantage.
A pair of three-run home runs from Jessica Dutka and Aline Uehara in the sixth inning broke open the game.
Uehara (2-1) shut down the Knights in the final inning and earned the victory, pitching six innings. She allowed four hits for one run and struck out five.
In the second game, the Lady Rams were held scoreless by McKenzy Mackay through the first four innings, earning only three hits. In the fifth, Holcomb came through with an RBI double, bringing in McGrady who walked to start the inning.
Uehara opened the sixth inning with a double before coming around to score on a single from McGrady, but the Knights stifled the Bluefield rally. The Rams were then retired in order in the seventh, as SVU claimed the split.
Megan Meismer took the loss in the second game. She allowed eight hits and three earned runs in six innings.
Southern Virginia’s Cheyenne Hegstead brought home the first run for SVU in both games.
