Regional athletes earn top awards

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech junior guard Malcolm Delaney has been named a fourth team selection on the Sporting News All-America team.

Delaney, who also also selected All-District 3 by the United States Basketball Writers Association. led the ACC in scoring this season and was a unanimous selection to the All-ACC first team.

He is the first Virginia Tech player to earn All-America honors since Zabian Dowdell was named an honorable mention AP All-America selection in 2007.

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia senior guard Da’Sean Butler has been selected as a second team All-America by Foxsports.com.

Butler, who was also chosen to the All-District 3 team by the USBWA, has led the Mountaineers to a 24-6 record, contributing 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists, along with connecting on 35 percent from 3-point range.

HUNTINGTON — Marshall placed two players on the All-Conference USA second team. Freshman phenom Hassan Whiteside has contributed 13.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.4 blocks for the 23-7 Thundering Herd, while senior forward Tyler Wilkerson leads Marshall, scoring 13.9 points, and 7.2 rebounds a game.

Whiteside was also chosen to the Foxsports.com All-Freshman team, leading the nation in blocked shots and developing into an NBA prospect in just his third season of organized basketball.
