BUENA VISTA, Va. —
Bluefield College opened its 2011 baseball season on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan University.
Bluefield won the opener 11-1, and added a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.
Travis Weaver and Victor Torres collected three hits apiece in the 11-1 rout, with David Gibson and Mike Newton combining on the six-hitter, striking out four and walking one.
Weaver also scored three runs for the Rams, and joined Zac Goodyear with a pair of RBIs. Goodyear, Kyle Cabral, Jon-Michael Thruett, Joe Gatewood and Andrew Dickerson had two hits apiece.
Bluefield finished with 17 hits.
The Rams made it a sweep with a 4-1 decision. Josh McQuade started, but lasted just one inning. Adam Hoyt pitched the final six innings, allowing just one hit, striking out eight and walking none.
Southern Wesleyan had just one hit in the game.
Goodyear had two of Bluefield’s seven hits, while Thruett drove in two.
Bluefield will play Southern Wesleyan in a single game today at 3 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Bluefield State opened its baseball season on Saturday with an 8-1 loss at Stillman College in Alabama.
Austin Leary tossed six scoreless innings and Cody Clements added two hits and two RBI for the Tigers.
Bluefield State scored its lone run on a two-out single in the eighth inning by J.C. Shepherd. Martin Arias took the loss for the Blues, allowing six runs and six hits and 4 2/3 innings on the mound.
The two clubs were slated to meet again in a twinbill on Sunday. No report was received.
Bluefield State will travel to Guilford College in North Carolina on Thursday.

Concord will open its first baseball season under head coach Andrew Wright on Feb. 12 at Tusculum College.
In college softball news, Concord travels to Lincoln Memorial on Feb. 16, while Bluefield State will welcome WVIAC foe Ohio Valley on March. 5.
Bluefield will visit Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va., on March 3.
