CU cheers to top-10 finish

ATHENS — The Concord cheerleading team’s January trip to Disney World was fun, but it was no vacation.

The Lady Lions traveled to “The Happiest Place on Earth” to take part in the National Collegiate Cheerleading Championships the weekend of Jan. 13-15 in Orlando, Fla., and came home with the eighth-place trophy in the All-Girls Division II competition.

Fifteen teams composed the field, with the top nine advancing to the final round.

“I’m very proud of how we did,” said Concord head coach Lisa Blankenship. “We compete with 20 members on the team, and 14 were new this year, including all five of our ‘flyers.’ ”

She added, “The results were very close: only seven points separated us from third place.

“It’s the eighth straight year Concord has finished in the national top ten.”

The University of West Geor-gia won the event, with Slippery Rock, Southern Connecticut State, Avila University and Misericordia University completing the top five.

The rest of the top 10 consisted of the College of New Jersey, Kutztown University, CU, the University of Scranton and Fredonia State University.

2012 marked Concord’s 16th consecutive appearance in the national competition.
