HUNTINGTON —
One of the top rebounders in the country last season has been ruled eligible for the upcoming basketball season.
Dennis Tinnon, a 6-8 forward on the Marshall University basketball team, was cleared on Tuesday to play as a senior for the 2012-13 season, according to a Marshall press release.
Tinnon has been involved in a lengthy appeals process with the NCAA.
There were questions about his eligiblity revolving around his completion of work at a high school in his hometown of Green Bay, Wis., and his attendance at a junior college in North Dakota and at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College.
“We are absolutely thrilled by the decision and most importantly for Dennis and his family,” said Marshall head coach Tom Herrion. “I applaud the efforts of the NCAA. As I’ve said all along, we were simply looking for justice to be served and clearly that is the case with this decision.”
Tinnon, in his junior year at Marshall last season, started all 35 games and averaged 10.2 points and 10 rebounds.
He was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive Team but also ranked sixth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds with 4.0 per game.
“Words can’t describe the feelings I have after hearing the news,” Tinnon said in the press release.
“My family and I are so excited and grateful for the decision and opportunity to complete my playing career at Marshall.
“I want to thank [Marshall President] Dr. Stephen J. Kopp, [Athletic Director] Mike Hamrick, [Associate Athletic Director] Jeff O’Malley, [Associate Athletic Director] Derek Gwinn and coach Herrion for helping with this case.
“As painful as it was at times due to the long process, I had faith in them that they were presenting the best case possible.”
