BLUEFIELD —  Bluefield College senior Omar Reed has been selected as an NAIA third team All-American. A senior from Tazewell, Reed tallied 16.1 points, 11.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Rams. Also the Appalachian Athletic Conference player of the year and defensive player of the year, Reed ranked third nationally in rebounds per game, and was among the nation’s leaders, shooting 53.2 percent from the field.

The Bluefield College Rams baseball team— which won the 2009 National Christian College Athletic Association national championship — sits on top of the first NCCAA poll of the season. Bluefield is 15-4 on the season, and ranks among the top 11 in eight NCCAA statistical categories. Bluefield, which has played on the road for a month, opens its home season on March 27 against Union.

Former Princeton standout Tesla Akers, right, finished her first season at Ferrum College by earning All-USA South third team recognition. Akers started all 28 games, scoring 10.8 points a game, along with 4.6 assists and 2 steals a contest. Former Bland County star Tonya Wright, below right, a Ferrum senior, was a first team honoree. Wright tallied 15.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game for the 21-7 Panthers.

Concord University pitcher Chastin Akers has been chosen as the West Virginia Conference co-Pitcher of the Week. Akers, a junior from Narrows, tossed a complete-game five-hitter and struck out seven as Concord downed West Liberty last week 5-1. Akers shared the honors with Wheeling Jesuit’s Shane Sullivan.
