ATHENS —
Concord junior and Princeton product Amanda Smith scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Concord women’s basketball team to a thrilling 86-81 overtime win over West Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening at the Carter Center.
Concord, which had started the season with two losses, improved to 1-2 and will host Pitt-Johnstown in the Lions’ West Virginia Conference opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Smith was 14-of-21 from the field, scoring 12 points in the first half, 14 in the second and four more in overtime. Smith also pulled down seven rebounds.
Concord made 44.7 percent of their shot attempts, while also forcing 14 turnovers and committing just 10 of their own.
Stephanie Wagner and Tanisha Williams both added 15 points while Sammi Webster tallied 10 points for the Lions. Honaker product Rachel Artrip added nine points, seven boards and three assists. Wagner also dished out five assists.
Despite being forced to overtime, Concord only trailed for 1:27 in the game.
Amy Gardner led the Golden Bears with 26 points.
Concord improved to 18-10 against West Virginia Tech since 1994, and improved to 5-1 in its last six season openers.
