BLUEFIELD, Va. — —
Dozens of local young hoopsters are on the campus of Bluefield College this week, participating in the final two of eight sports camps of the summer.
Under the instruction of BC coaches Richard Morgan, a former All-American at the University of Virginia, and Keith Jennings, a former NBA player for the Golden State Warriors, boys ages five to 18 are participating in a basketball camp designed to improve fundamentals, footwork, fitness, enthusiasm, and teamwork.
“We definitely want the kids to improve their game by spending the week with us,” said Morgan, who led the Rams to the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship in just his first season at the helm, “but we also want them to learn how to play the game, how to demonstrate sportsmanship, and how to play as a team.”
The coaches and current BC players are working each day in the Dome Gymnasium from 9 a.m. to noon with kids ages five to eight and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with kids ages nine to 18.
At the end of the week, in addition to a better game, the kids will take home awards and accolades, as well as a Ram camp t-shirt.
The second camp this week and final for the summer is a boys’ basketball team camp, July 30-31.
The two-day team camp for junior varsity boys basketball teams includes a three-game competition guarantee, a hospitality room for coaches, awards, and a skills lesson taught by former NBA player Keith Jennings.
The individual and team boys basketball camps this week are just two of eight sports camps that were scheduled at Bluefield College this summer.
Morgan hosted another individual boys basketball camp in June, while BC women’s basketball coach Steve Hardin hosted three basketball academies for girls in June and July.
Men’s soccer coach Pete Dryer hosted a boys and girls soccer camp in June for kids ages 5-14 and a boys and girls soccer camp in July for high school players.
