BLUEFIELD —
Thirty days ago, the Virginia Tech Hokies shocked state rival Virginia, taking a 47-45 win in Charlottesville. The rematch comes tonight at 9 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.
The Hokies (15-12, 4-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) are led on the court by guards Erick Green, averaging 15.5 points and 2.9 assists per game, and Dorenzo Hudson with an average of 10.9 points a game.
Green’s streak of 28 games with double-figure scoring is the longest among ACC men.
The Cavaliers (20-6, 7-5) are ranked No. 25 in Monday’s Associated Press men’s poll.
Senior forward Mike Scott leads Virginia in scoring and rebounding with 17.2 points and 8.2 boards a game, while shooting 58.9 percent from the field — best in the ACC — and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Guard Joe Harris adds 11.8 points a game for Virginia. Senior Sammy Zeglinski is averaging 8.1 points a game. Jontel Evans leads the Cavaliers in assists (97) and steals (41).
As a team, Virginia ranks first in the ACC in scoring defense (51.9), three-point field goal percentage defense (27.8 percent), rebounding defense (28.6) and defensive rebounding percentage (75.0 percent).
In the Jan. 22 game in Charlottesville, Green and Hudson had 15 and 12 points respectively for Virginia Tech. Scott, Harris and Evans topped Virginia’s scoring column with 10 points each.
Scott scored 25 points with seven rebounds Saturday as Virginia beat Maryland 71-44 at John Paul Jones arena. Freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon added 14 points, and Zeglinski scored 11. Sophomore forward Akil Mitchell had a career-high 10 rebounds for Virginia.
Also on Saturday, Virginia Tech picked up an ACC win, defeating Georgia Tech 74-73 in overtime. Hudson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to decide matters for the Hokies, who had only five turnovers in the game. Green was one of four Hokies in double figures.
The game will be televised by ESPNU and carried on ESPN3.
Virginia leads the series with Virginia Tech 81-53, but the Hokies lead 28-16 in games played in Blacksburg. Eight of the last nine games in the series have been decided by seven points or less, including three overtime games.
