CU women golfers win opener by 40

CLARKSBURG — The women’s golf team of Concord University got their season off to a successful start Monday by winning the Falcon Fall Classic at Sunny Croft Country Club in Clarksburg by 40 strokes.

The Lady Lions’ team total of 631, 63 over par, in the two-day event easily surpassed West Virginia Wesleyan’s 671 and Fairmont State, the host school, at 674.

Stephanie Peareth shot 148, 6-over par, to take home top individual honors. Peareth, whose first-round score of 73 was the second-lowest single-round score of the tournament, was one of four Mountain Lion golfers to produce a top-10 finish.

Marina Erice came in fourth place after rounds of 80 and 79. Justine Knox ended up in a tie for fifth place at 21 over and Shelby Myers tied for eighth at 22 over.

Bluefield resident Alex Smith turned in a 23 over par total to finish in 11th place.

Concord plays again on Sept. 30 at the WVIAC Northern Regional Championships.
