Day fills vacated Town Council seat
BLUEFIELD, Va. — A person who once served the people of Bluefield, Va., as an administrator will soon serve them again as a member of the Bluefield Town Council.
Former town manager Todd Day was appointed Monday evening to assume the council seat vacated when Edwin L. “Ed” Shaffrey, council member since 2002, relocated to Charlottesville, Va. Shaffrey resigned Sept. 24. The resignation was effective Oct. 1.
Day, 41, was town manager for 14 years before he left in July this year to pursue a new job opportunity. He is currently vice chairman of Corte Construction.
“I’ve been with the town for 14 years, and I’m very passionate about the successes of Bluefield, Va.,” Day said after the council unanimously appointed him. “It’s an honor that they called me.”
Day will serve the remainder of Shaffrey’s unexpired term, which continues for approximately nine more months.
Mayor Don Harris said when the Shaffrey’s resignation was announced that the town was grateful for his devoted service and commitment to the town of Bluefield, Va.
In other business, the council voted unanimously to donate $8,000 of in-kind work to help restore the Ridge Runner miniature train at Lotito Park in neighboring Bluefield. The Save the Ridge Runner Committee requested a $2,000 donation along with $8,000 of in-kind work.
“Certainly, we appreciate anything we could get, and $8,000 in-kind is more than appreciated,” said Art Riley of the Save the Ridge Runner Committee. “And it’s more than we had an hour ago.”
The committee has raised approximately $76,000, about half its goal, Riley said.
