McDowell County man escapes being hit by train; car totaled

WELCH — A man escaped injury in McDowell County after his vehicle was struck by a train near Northfork.

A Saturn Sedan stalled on the railroad tracks on Cherokee Road at 11:30 p.m. Sunday night as a train was approaching, according to Sgt. R.A. Maddy of the West Virginia State Police Welch Detachment.

Maddy said the driver escaped injury by exiting the vehicle before the impact with the train.

The impact of the collision with the train caused the vehicle to flip.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper First Class B.J. Garretson.

Maddy said the conductor of the Norfolk Southern train attempted to stop the train to avoid the impact with the vehicle.

However, he was only able to decrease the train speed to about 9 mph.

Maddy said Garretson has contacted Norfolk Southern and is working to complete a crash investigation.

The vehicle was totaled as a result of the impact with the train.
