Woodard leads for nomination
POCAHONTAS, Va. — David Woodard held on to a narrow six-vote lead Tuesday in a three-way race for the Democratic nomination for the Northern District seat on the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors.
With 11 of 11 precincts reporting, Woodard led the local primary contest with 220 votes followed by 214 votes for Robert “Spot” Steele and 168 for Tommy Childress, according to unofficial returns.
If the election results don’t change after the votes are canvassed today, Woodard will face Republican James T. “Jim” Campbell for the Northern District board seat in the November general election, according to County Registrar Debbie Barrett.
“It is a very close vote,” Woodard said. “But there were three good candidates. I think it speaks well of the Democratic Party that there was such a good slate of candidates to choose from. I’m awaiting the official canvass that will come (today) at 1 p.m. But I’m excited, and I’m humbled to have the opportunity to represent the Democratic ticket. I think we have a winning team with Mike Hymes, Bill Wimmer and myself, and it’s time to move Tazewell County forward.”
Woodard, a current member of the Tazewell County School Board, led the unsuccessful fight last year to save Pocahontas High School. He is the owner and operator of a local convenience store in Pocahontas.
Voter turnout across Tazewell County for the Democratic primary was light.
However, the contested Democratic nomination battle in the Northern District did generate interest. Barrett reported a moderate voter turnout in the Abbs Valley and Pocahontas precincts, and a smaller voter turnout in other precincts such as Adria, Amonate, Bishop, Boissevain, Falls Mills and Tip Top.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, only 729 people had voted in Tazewell County, which was about 1.63 percent of the county’s registered voters, Barrett said. By late Tuesday, voter turnout was estimated at closer to 974 ballots cast.
The Northern District seat was vacated by the resignation of Bill Rasnick. Dr. Tom Brewster was appointed to temporarily fill the Northern District vacancy. Brewster opted not to seek the Democratic nomination for the full term.
