TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Could it now be that Facebook is now a dog’s best friend?
About a month ago a family was camping in the northern Michigan woods, walking along a trail when their dog suddenly sprinted away.
Though they searched for their little black pug, Ivy, for the rest of the weekend, it was not to be found. Sadly, they packed up and headed home to Grand Rapids.
Then then family turned to Facebook, creating a page about their missing dog and putting the word out. Soon they ended up networking with about 1,000 people.
A week or so later they pretty much assumed that their pet had been taken in by someone (best case), or had become prey to a wild animal (worst).
That was until Sunday. The family had scheduled one last search but as the day wore on there was still no sign of Ivy. They were quite dejected as they prepared to leave again.
Then the phone rang. A couple who was camping for the weekend at Manistee Lake -- about 10 miles away from where the pug was last seen -- spotted a little black dog walking up from the lake. The dog's tag contained a cell number.
Soon the love connection had been completed. The dog had been discovered and returned.
“What was really amazing," the owner recalled, "was the amount of support we were able to get online with Facebook,” he said.
The Facebook connections had inspired them to keep looking and not give up. “People were on there telling stories of dogs that had been gone for weeks and made their way home,” the jubilant owner recalled.
Now they have another one to tell -- one with a happy, tail-wagging ending.
