Raleigh student caught with gun

BECKLEY — Beckley Police confirmed a Raleigh County middle school student has been detained in a juvenile facility after having a gun, marijuana and alcohol at Friday’s Woodrow Wilson High School homecoming football game.

Beckley Police Detective Sgt. David Allard confirmed the student has been charged with the possession of a firearm by a juvenile, possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol.

The gun was a 9 millimeter pistol, said Allard.

Jeff McClung, director of Raleigh County Pupil Services, commended the school’s security guards for following up on a tip, investigating that suspicion and dealing with the incident in a quick and safe manner.

“We really want to recognize those people for the hard work they did that night and being able to handle the situation,” he said.

McClung said the school cannot release details about the student’s identity or about the incident itself because it is under investigation by the school system.

The homecoming dance was canceled and McClung said he and Miller Hall, director of secondary education, plan to meet with Woodrow Wilson High School staff before the next ball game to talk about safety and supervision strategies.

“We will look at making sure standing crowds don’t accumulate and those kinds of things to increase security for our students and community,” McClung said.
