METHUEN, Mass. — Josephine Carelli was greeted with a sight fit for Fourth of July eyes as she set up her weekly domino game on a cold winter day at the senior center in this Boston suburb.
"Oh, my lord!" she exclaimed. "I've never seen a flag so big in all my life."
There, stretched across the auditorium floor, was a 20-by-30 foot American flag, its edges badly frayed from flying for several years high above a local auto dealership.
Charlie Daher, owner of Commonwealth Motors, asked senior center volunteers to stitch the giant Old Glory back into shape,
Joyce Desrosiers, who teaches quilting at the senior center, and Cheryl Sirois stepped right up as the lead stitchers. Sirois said she repaired an even larger flag for another auto dealer in the 1980s.
"The stars went from my living room to my bedroom," said Sirois. "I'm an apple pie American. I like fixing the flag."
