Tazewell mayor dies

TAZEWELL, Va. — A town leader dedicated to his profession and his community passed away suddenly Friday evening at a local hospital.

Tazewell Mayor Dr. Charles Grindstaff had finished participating in the town’s annual tree lighting ceremony before leaving to help officiate at a basketball game at Tazewell Middle School, said Town Manager Jerry Wood, a long-time friend and colleague. Grindstaff later felt ill and left the game.

“He drove himself to Tazewell Community Hospital and passed away there,” Wood said. “That was about 7 p.m.”
