Evelyne Stowers (Frye) Webb, Jr.

WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Evelyne Stowers (Frye) Webb, Jr., 84, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, Va. Born February 28, 1925 in Clear Fork, Bland County, Va., she was the youngest daughter of Gaston and Onnie Mae Stowers. Evelyne attended Sunny Point Elementary School and graduated from Rocky Gap High School. Later, she attended and graduated from West Virginia Business College and began her career as a Certified Public Accountant working with several coal companies in Bluefield, W.Va. Soon, she met her first husband, Garland E. Frye, who was in the Army. They began their life traveling to such places as Ft. Hood, Texas, Ft. Knox, Ky., overseas to Germany twice, Ft. Sill, Okla., Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, then to Ft. Riley, Kan. She was fortunate enough to work for the federal government for 32 years, retiring in 1996 as a Supervisor Budget Analyst. They had two children, Dennis Frye, who retired from the Air Force and is currently a school counselor in New Mexico, and Jeffrey Frye, also retired from the Air Force and is now working in Washington, D.C. as a military aircraft coordinator and scheduler. Not only was she preceded in death by her parents, but also by her first husband on Sept. 2, 1966. Later, her older brother, Wilburn Stowers on Aug. 5, 1972; followed by her three older sisters, Rosa (Stowers) Gordon on Dec. 1, 1988. Cordie Mae (Stowers) Meadows on Dec. 30, 1992, and Miss Hazel Stowers on Dec. 31, 1999.

Evelyne (Stowers) Webb, Jr. leaves behind her devoted husband of 34 years, Harlan Webb, Jr. They began their life together at Ft. Riley, Kan. before Harlan retired from the Army. Later, they moved to Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. before Harlan retired from Civil Service. Both returned to Rocky Gap, Va. in 2000. Not only does Mrs. Webb leave behind two children, Dennis and his wife Betty Frye and Jeffrey and his wife Iris Frye; five grandchildren, Adam, Chris, Diane, Sean, and Rachel Frye; and five great-grandchildren, Sienna, Cambria, Leighton, Jaelyn, and Grace.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. also at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Callahan presiding. Mrs. Webb will be laid to rest at Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield. Pallbearers will be Chris Frye, Sean Frye, Robert Webb, Adam Frye, Ronnie Fanning, and Eugene Elmore. A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, Va. has the honor of serving the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorial gifts be made to the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church.
