Clarence W. Powers

WAR — Clarence W. Powers Sr., age 90, of War, W.Va., died Friday, December 18, 2009, at Welch Community Hospital. Born February 22, 1919, in Lansing, N.C., he was the son of the late Ezra and Florence Miller Powers.

He was a resident of War since 1935. He was a member of War United Methodist Church. Before retiring he owned and operated Clarence Powers Enterprises in War. He was a former city councilman and he attended La Salle University for four years in Chicago, Ill.

He was preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, his wife, Georgia T. Gilbert Powers; one daughter, Georgia Hyatt; four brothers, Ancel, J.C., Thomas and Robert Powers; one half sister, Margaret Powers.

Survivors include one daughter, Florence Powers of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Clarence Powers Jr. of War, Franklin D. Powers of Winchester, Va., Robert Powers of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11 a.m. from the War United Methodist Church in War with the Rev. Gus Anderson officiating. If inclement weather still exists, the funeral will then be at Fanning Funeral Home in Welch. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.

Friends may call Monday morning one hour prior to services at the church unless the services are changed to the funeral home, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1816 Jefferson Road, Bluefield, WV 24701-4032, or to the War United Methodist Church, War, WV 24892.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
