Roscoe Rife
DANVILLE, Va. — Roscoe Rife, 73 years of age, of Danville Va., formerly of Buchanan County, passed away at his home Tuesday, December 8, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Lee Owen and Pinkie Smith Rife. He was a resident of Buchanan County all his life until recently moving to Danville, Va. in July of 2009. Roscoe was an EMT for Grundy Ambulance Service and a funeral home attendant for Grundy Funeral Home until he retired. He was an Ordained Church of God Minister and was a member of the Home Creek House of Prayer. He was a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict and served in the Army Reserves for three additional years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Carol Beavers Rife, Danville, Va.; one daughter, Beverly and husband Bruce Bourne, North Tazewell, Va.; five sons, Roy Lee and his wife Cindy Rife, Vansant, Va., James Rife, Columbus, Miss., Andrew and his wife Carol Rife, Vansant, Va., Ricky Ray and his wife Lisa Rife, Haysi, Va., Buford Roscoe (Josh) and his wife Chaddi Rife, Jr., Danville, Va.; one brother, James Leland Rife, Vansant, Va.; also, survived by 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Matthew Rife; two sisters, Dolly and Wanda Rife; three brothers, Robert Henry Rife, Roger Lee Rife and Jacob Barnes Rife.
Funeral services for Roscoe Rife will be Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Chapman and the Rev. Lester Boyd officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va.
Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home after 6:00 p.m. Thursday with a song service Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. and regular services Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be Christopher Rife, Jonathan Rife, James Rife Jr., Cody Bandy, Bruce Bourne and Rick Bowman.
Honorary pallbearers will be present and former employees of Grundy Funeral Home, Mason Rife, Keith Isom, II, Wayne Caldwell, Dr. Clint Sutherland, nurses of Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice, members of Virginia State Police and members of Danville Life Saving Crew.
Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the Childs – Gentry Post #7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Heavenly Helpers Relay for Life Cancer Team, P. O. Box 1016, Grundy, VA 24614.
