PRINCETON — Dr. Bernard P. Kiernan, 79, of 802 Park Ave. in Princeton died Sunday, December 6, 2009, at his residence. Born in Paris, France, February 9, 1930 he was the son of the late Joseph and Marie Palenc Kiernan. Dr. Kiernan retired from the Social Sciences Department of Concord University in Athens in 1998 following a 38 year career. He received his Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree and his Doctorate in Intellectual History from American University in Washington, D.C. During his career, Dr. Kiernan had numerous articles published as well as a book on political affairs of Russia and Communism. Several years ago he earned second place in the Seniors Division of Jeopardy. He was an avid chess player and enjoyed traveling, walking and tennis.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patricia A. “Pat” Trezise Kiernan of Princeton; one daughter, Susan E. Kiernan and her partner Jan Carlton of Silver Spring, Md.; one granddaughter, Dawn Howard and her husband Steve and their daughter Emily of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and one grandson, Michael Meyer, also of Martinsburg, W.Va.
In keeping with his wishes, the body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1816 Jefferson St., Bluefield, WV 24701. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton is serving the Kiernan family.
