Venus J. Penn

BLUEFIELD — Venus J. Penn, 84, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Saturday, December 5, 2009.

Mrs. Penn was born August 31, 1925 in Bluefield, W.Va., the daughter of the late James L. Jennings and Julia Johnson Jennings.

She was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Penn taught school during World War II at Big Creek, W.Va. After the war, she married the late Walter E. Penn from Bluefield, W.Va.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed the arts and culture. She attended Bluefield schools and Bluefield College. She was involved in her church, clubs, organizations and volunteer work such as Bluefield's Young Women's Christian Association, Baptist Missionary, Appalachian Art Club, Red Hat's Society, Bluefield Art Club, and Senior Friends. She loved music concerts and participation in the church choir, and playing the piano. Her artistic paintings have been on show and recognized with blue ribbons at various times in the community and at the West Virginia State Fair.

In addition to her parents, Venus was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Penn; her mother, Lottie Napier; and one son-in-law, Henry (Chip) Young.

Survivors include her two daughters, Julia Young of Columbia, S.C. and Anna Beth Workman and her husband Randell Workman of Lewisburg (Auto), W.Va.; two grandsons, Matthew Scott Young of Columbia, S.C. and Christopher Workman of Lewisburg (Auto), W.Va.; one brother, Ernest (Sonny) Heaton of Orlando, Fla.; great-granddaughter, Shelby Young; several nieces and nephews; special in our hearts, Kay and Don Davis and all the caregivers at Ridge Care Assisted Living.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday December 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va. with Dr. Allen A. Hammond officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour on Tuesday.

Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery where family and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher Workman, Fred Workman, Andrew Jackson Workman, Don Davis and Mark Lawless.
