Matilda (Tilda) McCowan O’Quinn

VANSANT, Va. — Matilda (Tilda) McCowan O’Quinn, 92 years of age, went to her heavenly home to be with her departed loved ones on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. She had been in declining health for several years. Born in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Sarah McCowan. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church for 61 years and was a wonderful homemaker. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was owner/operator of Vansant Discount Fabric Shop, Vansant, Va.

Tilda leaves behind many friends who love her dearly, especially her newly acquired friends at the Broadmore Assisted Living Center in Bristol, Tenn. She was loved and cherished by both staff and residents. To know Tilda was to love her.

Mrs. O’Quinn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Finis O’Quinn, September 9, 1986.

Family members left to honor her memory include two daughters, June and husband Clifton Owens, Bristol, Tenn., Loretta and husband Ray Lafferty, Bud, W.Va.; one son, Tivis O’Quinn and friend Laura Phillips, Vansant, Va.; one granddaughter, Sandra Dee and husband Matthew Price, Bristol, Tenn.; three grandsons, Ryan and wife Heather O’Quinn, Calabasas, Calif., Bobby and wife Emma Lafferty, Hollister, Fla., Benjamin Lafferty, Huntington, W.Va.; one sister, Ruby Kiser, Council, Va. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Emily and husband Frelin Yates and Berthie O’Quinn, both of Haysi, Va.; and one brother-in-law, Walter and wife Trinie O’Quinn, Hollister, Fla.; four great-granddaughters, Lilah and Haley O’Quinn and Madison and Mary Anne Price; three great-grandsons, Bradley, Samuel and Elijah Paul Lafferty; and several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Kathy Jackson and Kitty Jackson of Council, Va.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mona; son, Curtis (Bobby); daughter-in-law, Delores O’Quinn; three sisters, Virgie, Meda and Zora; five brothers, Wesley, Tom, Dewey, Stafford and Stanford; and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Matilda (Tilda) McCowan O’Quinn will be conducted Friday, December 4, 2009 at 12:00 noon at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Roger Coleman officiating with burial to follow at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Clifton Owens and Ray Lafferty; and grandsons, Ryan O’Quinn, Bobby Lafferty, Benjamin Lafferty, and Matthew Price.

Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Scott, Ralph Coleman, Joe Addison, Arthur Duty, Jack Yates, Dorothy Newsome, personal caregiver while at home, the Broadmore Assisted Living Staff and the Hospice House Staff in Bristol.
