BLUEFIELD, Va. — Margaret Compton Owens, 86, of Bluefield, Va. died Saturday November 21, 2009 at a Princeton hospital following a lengthy illness. Born February 21, 1923 in Bluefield, Va., she was a daughter of the late Estile Samuel Compton and Mary Ellis Compton.
Margaret was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of Circle # 5 of the church. During World War II, Margaret worked at the Pentagon with Eleanor Roosevelt and later returned home to take care of her family. She later worked as a secretary for Pocahontas Fuel Company and after her marriage, worked with her husband at Venoy Owens Public Accounting. She was an avid gardener and was a former member of Bluefield Lioness Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Venoy Owens; a sister, Mary Argabright; and brothers, Dick Compton, Alfred Compton and Bluford Compton.
She is survived by her son, Samuel Owens and his wife Brenda of Bluefield; a sister, Nancy Clark and her husband John of Elon, N.C.; and a brother, Ralph Compton of Dublin, Va.; a grandson, Richard Goosens of Trula Vista, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Carol Scott and Carlotta Cox.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday November 24, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Wildwood Mausoleum of Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Princeton, W.Va. with Dr. Don Scott officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday November 24, 2009 at Mercer Funeral Home from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Those attending services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 2:30 Tuesday.
