Garland J. Thornton
LINDSIDE — Garland J. Thornton, age 86, of Lindside, passed away Saturday November 14, 2009 at Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg, Va. Born September 2, 1923 at Lindside, he was the son of the late John Steven Thornton and Addie L. Owens Thornton. Garland was a retired employee of the Celanese Corp., Narrows, Va. He was a member of the Lindside Christian Church where he served as an Elder of the Church for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and several other outdoor activities. In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Wilson Thornton; two brothers, Junior and Lee Thornton.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wilson Thornton; a son, David Thornton and wife Deidri of Narrows, Va.; three daughters, Gloria Belcher and husband Larry, Nanette Hatfield and husband Jeff, all of Peterstown, W.Va., and Terry Oney and husband Todd of Lindside, W.Va.; thirteen grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 17, 2009 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, W.Va. with Minister Henry Conley officiating. Burial will follow at the Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, W.Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
