LEBANON, Va. — Mr. E. Garland Brown, Sr., age 85, of Lebanon, Va., passed away Sunday morning (October 25, 2009) in an Abingdon, Va., hospital. Born January 16, 1924 in Drill, Va., he was a son of the late William Arthur and Martha Ann Nuckles Brown. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II. He had formerly been employed as a coal miner at Red Jacket Coal and Island Creek Coal Company for twenty-three years, owned and operated the Texaco Service Station at Rosedale for nine years, and currently owned and operated Brown's Auto and Trailer Sales for thirty-nine years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Amy Rachel Brown; one sister, Thelma Street; and one brother, McKinley Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Whited Brown of Rosedale; one daughter, Sharon Brown Sneed of Springfield, Va.; one son, E. “Ed” Garland Brown, Jr. and wife, Betsy of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Shannyn Sneed of Richmond, J.P. Sneed of Chicago, Ill., Michael Sneed of Busan, South Korea, and Nathan Brown and wife, Valerie of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Lucille Pendell of Bristol, Va.; five brothers, Elmer Brown of Haysi, Carl Brown of Colonial Beach, Va., Emory Brown of Spotsylvania, Va., Earl Brown of Bristol, Va., and Nelson Brown of Bluff City, Tenn.; special nephew, Virgil Kermit Street of Bristol, Va.; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Va. with the Rev. Ancil Childress, the Rev. Scott Suttle, and Elder James Ball officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Va.
Relatives will serve as pallbearers.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Va.
