Robert Raymond Matney

OAKWOOD, Va. — Robert Raymond Matney, age 82, of Oakwood, Va., passed away Sunday September 27, 2009 at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn. Born July 22, 1927 in Buchanan County, Va. he was the son of the late Lawson and Lona Matney. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a retiree of Island Creek Coal Company. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II at Pearl Harbor. He was also a Shriner. Raymond was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Tootsie Matney; one son, Tony Raymond Matney and wife, Sandee of Vansant; one grandson, Brandon Todd Matney of Surfside Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Mattie Mae Curry of Swords Creek, Va.; Nancy Davis of Richlands, Va. and Joyce Elswick of Kingsport, Tenn.; three brothers, Leonard (L.C.) Matney of Johnson City, Tenn., Kyle Matney of Abingdon, Va. and Don Matney of Richlands, Va.; a very special niece, Kelli Hale of Deel, Va.; several other nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bob and Cricket Moore and Danny Calhoun.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va. with Mr. Chris Webb officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands, Va. Pallbearers will be Mark Johnson, Jeff Brown, Chad Coleman, Pat Browning, Dean Curry, Cranston Patrick, Mike Matney and Mike Webb. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Moore, Danny Calhoun, Abe Hurt, Roger Coleman, John Webb, Sam Hale, Samuel Altizer, Junior Williams, Jimmy Gillespie, Dr. Ramesh Kabaria and the Staff of Preferred Health Care.

The family will receive friends after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain, Va.
