WAR — Grover S. Mahone, 93, of War went to his heavenly homecoming Tuesday, September 22, 2009 in Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born October 14, 1915 in War he was the son of Samuel and Annie Mahone. He was owner and manager of Grover S. Mahone’s Furniture and Appliance Store in War, and he introduced the first television to the community. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a member of the Big Creek District American Legion Post 43. He had been a member of the Tug Twirlers Square Dance Club in Welch, and an honorary member of the Welch Moose Lodge. He attended the Calvary Baptist Church in War.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Zeffree Jeffries Mahone of the home; one son, Grover C. Mahone and wife Marsha of War; one daughter, Chrissy Stepp and husband Harry Lee of War; a half brother, George Mahone of West Virginia; five grandchildren, Shirley A. Fuller, Kristen M. Mitchell, and Alivia, Ayla and Hunter Mahone, all of War; two great-grandsons, Brayden C. Stepp and Kason L. Mitchell of War; and a great-granddaughter, Leah who is due to arrive soon.
Mr. Mahone’s wish was to be cremated, and the family has honored this wish.
A memorial service will be held Monday, September 28, at 6 p.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church, War with the Rev. Travis Hyde officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 5-6 p.m. Monday.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, Box 308, War, WV 24892.
